Launching Ceremony of a booklet“The Status of Women in Sacred Texts

One day workshop and Launching Ceremony of a booklet
“The Status of Women in Sacred Texts”

The event was organized by the Council of Religions (CoR) on Saturday 22 August 2020 at 09.30 hrs at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute, Moka. Mr. Ahamad Boodoo and Miss Nusayhah Aumeer of Maison Dawah attended.

The event started with a ceremony whereby interfaith prayers were said by representatives of different religious bodies. Mrs. Allia Syed Hossen – Gooljar, initiator of the event, gave an interesting speech which englobes the status of women in various religions. “Les textes sacrés sont des lumières” quoted Father Philippe Goupille, the president of CoR. He was followed by Mr. Vyapoory Paramasivum Pillay, GOSK Former Vice-President of the Republic: “Men and women have distinctive roles. As a mother, she does not only give birth but helps in the spiritual, physical and psychological development of her child. For a father, he is also responsible for cultivating the mind of the child. He is the leader and decision-maker.” Lauching of the booklet “Status of Women in Sacred Texts”, introduced by Mrs. Allia, was done thereafter by Mr. Vyapoory. A vote of thanks by the secretary of CoR, Mr. Bashir Nuckchady, closed this first part of the event.

After a group photo session and tea break, the workshop proper started. Each speaker spoke on the status of women in his/her respective religion notably the Tamil Religion, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, the Bahá’í faith and Christianity. From the different presentations it transpires that all the sacred texts give women a high status in society. In all spheres of life their importance is known – be it as daughters, mothers or wives. Following the interventions, there was a Q&A session and summing up of the event at 15.15 hrs.

Maison Dawah: intercultural meeting in Grand-Baie

The event took place on Saturday, May 18, at the Grand Bay Social Welfare Center. Maison Dawah had planned an intercultural Iftar Gathering in close cooperation with the Nujjoo family from Grand Baie. Around sixty additional compatriots had responded to our invitation. Father Emmanuel (of French nationality) spoke on behalf of Father Philippe Goupille, the Council of Religions’ president. Following the opening remarks, Hossen Kurrimboccus of Maison Dawah presented a PowerPoint presentation on “Islam and Ramadan.” He essentially explained the five pillars of Islam and some facts of fasting during Ramadan. The subsequent interaction session was very lively, and we welcomed questions or comments the feedback was as follows:

  1. Why do Muslim women cover their heads with the hijab?
  2. Why do people choose to wear hijabs?
  3. Father Emmanuel of Grand Baie informed us that several priests in European nations keep a lengthy beard.
  4. A woman inquired as to whether “Assalamu’alaikum ” mean “peace.”
  5. A second woman said that she is a Muslim and a Christian.

Father Emmanuel addressed the audience. He read the written message that Father Goupille had graciously forwarded – a message of fraternity and friendship in the midst of Ramadan. Father Emmanuel expressed his joy at being with us for this multicultural encounter. He was taken aback when he witnessed the brotherly and joyous mood that pervaded the event.

After sunset, the guests were welcomed to have iftar with Maison Dawah’s team. The visitors were then invited to sit and watch their Muslim compatriots do the Maghrib prayer. It was a gracious and amicable atmosphere. Everybody was then invited for dinner and savored a delicious “chicken briani.” The visitors expressed their pleasure at having seen Islam “live” at this gathering.

Islamic Dawah Academy: Educating youths and assisting the underprivileged

The Islamic Dawah Academy (IDA), situated in Phoenix’s Noor Hall, was founded to provide Islamic education and assistance to families in need.

The interest shown by members of the Muslim community in the numerous events planned by IDA has provided the essential encouragement for its members to continue in the same path.

IDA organizes educational sessions in the areas of Dawah, Zaka’at, Islamic finance, and Sharia-compliant marriage preparation. Some of these classes have already begun, and anyone interested in learning more may contact the numbers listed below.

Hossen Tariq Kodabacus, president of IDA, is concerned about the deterioration of morality in Mauritius. “There are fewer young people attending madrasah and masjid. Our mission is to encourage and motivate these young people with the assistance of a competent team, instilling in them the necessary Islamic principles. Otherwise, these young people run the risk of being caught by the scourges that are already affecting our society” he said.

The Islamic Dawah Academy’s mission is not limited to educating and training youths, but also to assist families  that in need. As a result, it provides monthly food assistance to many impoverished households. Additionally, IDA conducts lectures for students during school breaks and excursions supervised by its members. Additionally, IDA gives notebooks to underprivileged youngsters in society.

Halimah Peerbux is the leader of the “IDA Muslimah Club,” and she is one of the many individuals who contribute significantly to the Islamic Dawah Academy. She is in charge of youth training and counselling. The Fellowship First Aiders of Rose-Hill are presently offering first aid classes to young girls. It is worth noting that IDA is collaborating with Maison Dawah on the “Dan Ou Bonus, Pas Blié Bann Pauvres” initiative.

Those interested in assisting the poor and participating in Islamic youth training may contact IDA on 606 2073 or 5766 54 55
